Having little control over our circumstances and the future can be frustrating. COVID-19 alone disrupted our future plans and now forces us to live day by day. While it can be tempting to think “what can I do… what’s the point? These types of circumstances also leave us with an important choice. We can focus on what we cannot control and be frustrated, or we can focus on the things we can control and see them as an opportunity.

One of our most precious resources is time. Everyone has the same number of hours in a day, the difference lies in how we spend them. Author of 48 laws of Power Robert Green, notes that there are two types of time: “alive time and dead time.”

Dead Time

When you sit around and wait for things to happen to you.

Alive Time

When you take control and consciously try to make every moment count. You look for ways to learn, improve and grow in every situation.

While we all face setbacks, those who make a change and achieve their goals are continually choosing alive time over dead time.

For example, Nelson Mandela.

A social activist that became the first black president of South Africa and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993.

In 1962, Mandela was sent to prison for opposing the oppressive government of that time with non-violent protest. Of the twenty-seven years in prison, eighteen were on Robben Island in an 8×7 seven-foot (2.5×2 meters) cell.

During the day he was forced to break rocks into gravel. But he spent his nights obtaining his law degree from the University of London. And when he was sent to solitary confinement, he used this time to write his autobiography.

“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” — Nelson Mandela

Control what you can (and make the most of it).

While we cannot control our circumstances and the tasks that we must do, we can choose our attitude and decide to make the most of each situation to come closer to our goals. The key is to find “dead time” moments in your day and turn them into “alive time” moments. If you have to commute to work, why not read a book? Clean the home while listening to an interesting podcast. Complete your bachelor’s or master’s degree at your own pace and online. Time may be free, but it is scarce and priceless. Dead Time or alive Time, what will you choose?
